This course will teach you about health, safety and environmental issues faced on construction sites, and how to communicate with others on the job. You will also gain a range of practical skills specific to site carpentry, including how to carry out first fix flooring and roofing, frames, partitions and stairs, how to carry out second fixing operations including skirting and architrave, how to carry out carpentry maintenance, and how to set up and operate a circular saw. This course will advance your knowledge of carpentry practice whilst on site. Students will develop their woodwork skills as well as widen their knowledge of construction technology and tool maintenance.

  • What will I learn?
    You will cover units including: Health, safety and welfare; Information, quantities and communication; Construction technology; Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools; First fixing operations; Second fixing operations; Structural carcassing operations; Maintenance to non-structural carpentry work, prior to and following plastering. If you haven't obtained this already, you will also complete the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This will enable you to apply for a Construction Operative Card so that you can work on site.
  • How will I be assessed?
    Assessment consists of coursework, exams and practical projects.
  • Where could this course lead to?
    The course will provide you with the necessary skills, training and knowledge to progress onto Level 3 Site Joinery. Some learners also choose to undertake an Apprenticeship or move into employment in the construction industry.
  • What qualifications or experience do I need?
    4 GCSEs at Grade D/3 or above including English and Maths, or Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery (or similar) and Level 1 Functional Skills. Learners with lower grades or relevant experience will be considered subject to an additional assessment and/or supporting reference from their school or employer. If you miss the English and/or Maths requirements of your course, don't worry - there are options to study these alongside your course.
