William Harris, Level 2 Light Motor Vehicle student at SMB College Group, recently completed his work experience placement at Lexus! We sat down with William to learn more about his experience and ask him for his advice for other students when approaching their own work experience placements.

Why did you choose to study Level 2 Light motor vehicle?

It was an interest of mine and I have loved cars since I was young.

Why did you choose SMB College Group?

Because it’s a good college and I have a supportive network of teachers and other staff members.

How did you get your work experience placement?

My Work Experience Co-ordinator, Faye, sourced it for me. I really enjoyed it and I know that it can be really difficult to get a good placement.

What has been your favourite part of your work experience so far?

Being able to showcase and use the knowledge that I have learned from working on cars in my own time and at college. I’ve also enjoyed being trusted to work with such a big dealership.

Do you feel like your work experience placement is helping you to get prepared for the world of work?

It gave me insight into what it will be like when I get a job and also reassures me that I’m doing what I want to do as a career.

What would be your advice for other students looking to get a good work placement in an industry that they're interested in/passionate about?

Show off your best skills and try your hardest when at college and on a placement, keep up with the expectations of work so it can lead to bigger opportunities or be a good reference on your CV.
