“My first year at Brooksby College has been extremely rewarding and has exceeded my expectations. As part of this qualification, all students are tasked to complete 150 hours of mandatory work experience in an animal related establishment. I was fortunate enough to secure a place at Farmlands Canine Country Club, a Dog Daycare facility located in Leicestershire. Finding a suitable work experience can be a challenge, however I found that physically visiting different animal establishments with my printed CV and cover letter gave me a greater chance at forming a successful first impression. This placement gave me the opportunity to develop many of my personal skills such as teamwork, customer service, problem solving and using my initiative as well as the opportunity to develop my knowledge and understanding of a wide range of the different dog breeds.
I enjoy being part of the team and learning a lot more about the canine world, further confirming my passion to work in the animal industry. I would say I am proudest of my growth in confidence throughout this experience and the positive feedback that my manager has given me during my time there. As a result of this, I have now been offered an official paid position of employment on the team. My time at Farmlands provided me with so much more than I expected, most notably the achievement of earning my (Accredited CPD) Emergency canine first aid qualification. My work experience manager kindly offered me a place in the canine first aid training class that was hosted at Farmland’s facility on the 11th January 2025 of which I was flattered by and keen to complete. This opportunity meant I could become a certified canine first aider which is impressive for future interviews and extremely useful in times of emergency. When I first arrived at Brooksby, I was unsure of what i specifically wanted to do with my future career. Since starting my studies, I have been inspired by my lecturers to pursue veterinary nursing and take this passion onto university. I am very much looking forward to continuing my time here at Brooksby College going into second year and would highly recommend this course to other prospective students.”
